TrueCrypt – Free Open Source Disk Encryption Software for Windows, Mac and Linux
The next version of TrueCrypt – TrueCrypt 7.0 has been announced with many enhancements and bug fixes. For those who are unaware of TrueCrypt, it is a free open-source disk encryption software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux that enables On The Fly Encryption (OTFE). Using API provided by Microsoft to encrypt files in safe documented way, this latest version includes many new feature additions and security enhancements as well.
Possessing Hardware-accelerated AES, TrueCrypt 7.0 comes with hardware acceleration support along with volumes that can be configured automatically (with proper passwords and keyfiles) whenever its host device is connected to the computer. A new feature called added to TrueCrypt 7.0 – “Favorites” allows users to set specific parameters for TrueCrypt volumes, using which one can mount all the devices simultaneously at an ease. Unlike the previous version that supported only file hosted volumes, TrueCrypt 7.0 now allows partition or device hosted volumes that can be created on drives that use sector sizes of 4096, 2048 or 1024.
Capable of Parallelization and pipelining, TrueCrypt 7.0 allows data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted. Implementing Encryption algorithms – AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish, TrueCrypt 7.0 can be operated in XTS mode. TrueCrypt 7.0 is available for downloaded in the official project homepage.
