Moblin, an optimized Linux platform provides a modern user experience for Netbooks, mobile devices, MIDs, and IVI systems. Moblin has a common core of Application and User Interface Services and APIs, which provide application developers a rich and consistent development environment across multiple device form factors.
Moblin project steering committee unveiled Moblin v2.1 for Intel Atom processor-based netbooks and nettops. Moblin v2.1 includes the broadest feature additions, customer requested improvements, and other improvements. Along with several bug fixes, this community release will have significant feature additions and improvements incorporated from the feedback of the users and developer community. Moblin v2.1 comes with enhanced browser functionality and plug-in support, UI enhancements, Bluetooth device management, support for 3G data connections, input method support for localized languages, integrated application installer for the Moblin Garage, performance and stability improvements, and additional overall help and documentation.
New features in Moblin v2.1 for Netbooks and Nettops
Internet Browser: Moblin includes a new internet browser application that far exceeds previous browser performance and adds full support for features such as plug-in support and add-ons.
Connection Manager: Connection Manager (ConnMan) has significant modifications particularly in the areas of performance and reliability and the latest version of ConnMan now supports Ethernet, WiFi, WiMAX, and 3G.
Nettop Support: Moblin v2.1 provides UI scaling for a wide range of nettop resolutions, including the ability to show more information in the Myzone panel based on the available screen space.
3G Data Support: Support for 3G data connections using the Ericsson MBM 3G modems has been enabled in Moblin v2.1.
Application Installer Integration: The Moblin Application Installer is integrated and provides a logically categorized list of applications that you can choose to install which comes from the Moblin Garage.
Clutter 1.0: This new version of Moblin contains Clutter 1.0, the Moblin animation framework.
Bluetooth Device Support: Bluetooth device discovery and pairing can be accessed from the new panel in the toolbar. It supports Bluetooth audio devices, input devices like keyboards and mice, OBEX file transfer, and using a Bluetooth phone as a 3G modem.
Improvements to Instant Messaging: Improvements have been included in Moblin v2.1 for Instant Messaging account setup, integration within the connection manager, and support for transparent connection on your local network.
Localization: Moblin v2.1 comes localized in the following languages (English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Swedish, Finnish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional).
In addition, Moblin v2.1 includes several updated versions of key technology components that the Moblin developers worked on with the various communities; these include the Linux kernel version 2.6.31, Intel Linux graphics driver 2.9, X server 1.6.4, and Mesa 7.6. Moblin v2.1 has Updated documentation, sample code, and updates to the Moblin SDK provided by the Moblin project steering committee.
