How To Reset iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

You can now bring your frozen iPod back to life by following few easy steps. If the iPod is frozen or if it is not turning ON, you need to reset it and the reset procedure will vary by model. If you are not sure of the iPod model, you can always identify your model by visiting the Apple support page at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353.

How To Reset iPhone and iPod touch

If an application or a feature is not working, then you will need to reset your iPhone or iPod touch in order to resolve the issue. To do this, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

How To Reset iPod with a Click Wheel

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold and turn it off again).
Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons together for about 6 to 8 seconds, until the Apple logo appear. Ensure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the click wheel and that you are pressing the Menu button towards the outside of the click wheel, and not near its center.

How To Reset iPod with scroll wheel, touch wheel and iPod dock connector

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold and turn it off again)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons together for about 6 to 8 seconds, until the Apple/iPod logo appears. If it does not work you may need to repeat this step.

If the above steps do not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug it into an electrical outlet, or connect your iPod to the computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and it is not set to go to sleep.

How To Reset iPod shuffle

Disconnect the iPod shuffle from your computer (if connected).
Move the switch to the OFF position. Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe near the switch is not visible. Wait 5 seconds.
Move the switch to the “play in order” or the “shuffle” position. Now the green stripe will be visible in either position. For iPod shuffle 2nd generation, just slide the power switch on (so you can see the green stripe).

Please be aware that when you reset an iPod all your music and files will be automatically saved. However, some of your custom settings may be lost. Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, Shuffle, Backlight timer, On-The-Go Playlists, and so forth will be automatically saved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

Amazon’s Kindle app ver2.2 for the iPhone and iPad contains the complete Oxford dictionary, Wikipedia and Google. Although the full dictionary feature of Kindle matches the Apple’s iBook app, Kindle has scored with better implementation of this feature.

In Kindle App, when you highlight a word, the definition of the word is automatically displayed at the bottom of the screen. So, you are “saving” an extra click as compared to Apple’s app.

In addition to this, links to Google and Wikipedia are also displayed to enable you to further investigate the word. Although this takes you out of the app and into the iPhone or iPad web browser, this is a handy feature for those who wish to increase their vocabulary. Also included alongside the links to Wikipedia and Google, is a link to “Full Definition” of the highlighted word. “Clicking the link takes you to new Oxford American Dictionary that’s automatically downloaded in v2.2, and contains some 250,000 entries,” Amazon informs.

The latest version of Kindle App for iPad, permits you to search inside a book, another feature that is similar to Apple’s iBooks functionality. Apart from these new features, the version 2.2 of Kindle app provides better line spacing on the iPad version, and fast-app switching for iOS 4 devices.

Apple to Look into iOS 4 Performance Issues On iPhone 3G

Following numerous complaints on Apple support forums and various tech blogs with regard to the performance issues of iOS 4 encountered by users of iPhone 3G, Apple has said that it is investigating the issue. In fact, these issues had been on the backburner as Apple was focusing on complaints about iPhone 4 antenna issues. BTW Apple is giving away free bumper cases for iPhone 4 users.

iPhone 3G users who had upgraded to latest iOS 4 have been facing 3 major issues,

Performance is slow after an upgrade to the new OS
Battery is drained quickly, hence requiring frequent recharge
When in use, the phone is getting heated up very quickly

Although these issues are not uncommon in any other iPhone, the recurring issues have annoyed the iPhone 3G users making them vent out their ire on Apple Support forums. As such, the latest iOS 4 from Apple is great, but it is not compatible with older versions of iPhone, except the iPhone 3G and 3GS. However, features such as multitasking are not working on 3G.

Adding to these is another issue, those users of iPhone 3G who had upgraded to iOS 4 and wanting to downgrade to an older OS, are encountering problems as well. Downgrading to an older OS seems to be a difficult task. However, the only option seems to be restoring the iPhone to factory settings. This too is not without an issue, since restoring to factory settings deletes any information you have stored on your iPhone.

So if you haven’t yet upgraded your iPhone 3G to iOS 4.0 then do wait for sometime until Apple clearly comes out with a solution.

If you are an Apple fan boy then you have got a very good news as the US Govt has announced that iPhone Jailbreaking and Unlocking is Legal. The United States Government announced that Jailbreaking and Unlocking of iPhones is legal if used solely for personal usage. The Govt also says that rooting of Mobiles and DVD Ripping is also legal until they are not violating any copyright law.

The Law explains the legality of cell phone “Jailbreaking” — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker. Many iPhone users have “jailbroken” their handsets in order to change wireless providers or use applications obtained from sources other than Apple’s own iTunes “App Store”. In its reasoning in favor of EFF’s jailbreaking exemption, the Copyright Office rejected Apple’s claim that copyright law prevents people from installing unapproved programs on iPhones: “When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses”.

Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;

Documentary filmmaking;

Noncommercial videos.

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:
